love where you live --kalamazoo, mi

We love where we live. It’s a huge part of why we decided to set roots down in Kalamazoo after growing up in the area. (Fun fact, we met when J was in middle school and Haley in high school). Kalamazoo has something special-a spark we just can’t completely describe-but by golly, we’ll try.

Nestled in the heart of southwest Michigan, Kalamazoo is a vibrant city that captures the essence of community, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, there are countless reasons to fall in love with this charming Midwestern gem. Here’s a look at what makes Kalamazoo a special place to call home for us!

1. A Thriving Arts and Culture Scene

Kalamazoo is a hub for creativity and the arts. The city boasts numerous galleries, theaters, and live music venues that cater to a diverse range of tastes. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts offers exhibitions that showcase local and national talent and amazing arts classes, while the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Gilmore Festival bring world-class performances to the stage. Events like the Kalamazoo Blues Festival and the monthly Art Hop highlight the city’s rich cultural tapestry, making it a vibrant place to experience creativity in all its forms. Some of our absolute favorites are Farmers Alley Theatre, the Park Trades building, and the Art on the Mall craft show in the summer.

2. A Strong Sense of Community

One of the standout features of Kalamazoo is its strong sense of community. The residents are friendly and welcoming, often coming together for local events, farmers' markets, and festivals. Neighborhoods are close-knit, and there’s a palpable sense of pride in the city. Volunteer opportunities abound, allowing residents to give back and strengthen community ties. We especially love the community feel at the Night Markets over the summer-you can usually find us there enjoying lemonade and a Missing Link hotdog.

3. Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities

For nature lovers, Kalamazoo offers a stunning array of parks, trails, and outdoor spaces. The Kalamazoo River Valley Trail provides scenic views for walking, biking, or running, while nearby parks like Milham Park and Prairie View Park offer recreational facilities and picnic areas. With easy access to lakes and forests, residents can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities year-round, from kayaking in the summer to hiking in the fall.

4. A Culinary Paradise

Kalamazoo’s culinary scene is as diverse as its residents. The city is home to a range of restaurants, cafes, and breweries that cater to every palate. From farm-to-table dining at local favorites to vibrant food festivals, there’s always something new to try. The presence of local breweries, like Bell’s Brewery, has put Kalamazoo on the map as a destination for craft beer enthusiasts, contributing to the city’s thriving gastronomic culture. We really love a lot of small businesses in the area like Nonla Burger, Cravings Deli, Principle, Roca, Los Brothers, and more.

5. Rich History

Kalamazoo has a rich history that is reflected in its architecture, museums, and local stories. From its early days as a railway hub to its development as a center for education and industry, the city’s past is an integral part of its identity. Historic landmarks and museums, such as the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, offer insights into the city’s heritage and provide a sense of connection to the past. We love that it’s free to checkout this museum. As a Kalamazoo native with familial roots, I (Haley) love going to the museum and seeing the Checker Cab and Gibson Guitars because my grandparents worked at both of those companies. It reminds me of them and the pride we have in our hometown.

Whether you’re drawn to Kalamazoo for its arts and culture, community spirit, or outdoor adventures, there’s no denying that this city has a unique charm. With its welcoming atmosphere, rich history, and vibrant lifestyle, it’s easy to see why so many people love where they live in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Embrace the magic of this incredible city and discover all the reasons to make it your home!
